Course Information

Description

This is a four-week advanced elective in addiction psychiatry at McLean Hospital campus in Belmont, MA. Students will be integrated within an interdisciplinary care team serving patients admitted to a 21-bed withdrawal management inpatient unit for adults with co-occurring substance use disorders and mental health conditions; during this time students also rotate with the hospital addiction consultation service assisting care teams on other inpatient units. These patient care experiences provide a rich learning environment to learn the fundamental structure of substance use disorder care delivery. Students also can follow patients who step down to the acute residential treatment programs on campus (Naukeag, LEADER) to experience a more longitudinal perspective of early recovery. There is no overnight call or weekend requirements during the rotation. Students receive clinical supervision from faculty leadership and are provided with ample opportunities to receive formative feedback on observed patient care interactions. Students will attend family support groups and are encouraged to attend peer support (e.g., AA, SMART Recovery) and program group therapies. In addition, students will receive training in motivational interviewing skills. During the month the student will work with the course director to complete a scholarly project relevant to addiction psychiatry and to the student's career development goals.
