Course Information

Description

This course offers an overview on mixed methods in social science research, emphasizing its application in the field of education and human development. We will consider various philosophical positions underlying mixed method approaches. Students will understand the rationale for thoughtfully and strategically combining methods, considering both the advantages and disadvantages of doing so. Methods for collecting, analyzing, integrating, and reporting data from multiples sources will be discussed and applied. The course is designed to prepare students to thoughtfully consider and apply the strategic use of mixed methods in research projects.

This course is designed for PhD students. Master’s students may apply to take the course. Students should have taken at least one quantitative methods course and one qualitative methods course as prerequisites.

Learning Goals =>Understand the philosophical assumptions underlying the use of mixed methods. =>Articulate your researcher stance and worldview. =>Explain the rationale for using a mixed methods research approach in a study. =>Understand the strengths and weaknesses of various mixed method designs. => Determine if a mixed methods study is suitable to answer particular research questions. => Develop an understanding of the principles for designing a mixed methods study. =>Evaluate the quality of mixed method proposals or findings. =>Apply mixed methods principles by designing or implementing a small-scale research project that integrates both qualitative and quantitative approaches, including data collection, analysis, integration, and reporting.
Career Focus
This doctoral-level seminar provides an in-depth exploration of mixed methods research, with a particular emphasis on its application in education and human development.

Students will critically examine methodological rationales for integrating qualitative and quantitative approaches, gaining insight into the strengths and limitations of these approaches. Through a combination of readings, discussions, and hands-on assignments, participants will learn to design, implement, analyze, and report mixed methods studies that address complex research questions in educational contexts.

The course is applied: students will engage in the strategic integration of methods by developing and presenting their own mixed methods research projects, preparing them to both consume and contribute rigorous scholarship to the field.
